Airplane Meals in Asia’s Airline

10 meals from airlines originating in Asia.

“There is no sport equal to that which aviators enjoy while being carried through the air on great white wings.”

— Wilbur Wright, 1905.

Hello everyone! We are the Airplane Food Comics team, and we cordially welcome you on-board this epic journey of ours exploring the exhilarating world of food at 30,000 feet.  We have been travelling frequently for the past 20 years and in the process have tried a variety of unique airplane food. From the prestigious 5-star Qatar Airlines to the inexpensive Air Asia, our experiences are extensive. In this edition of blog we would be ranking their food delicacy from the low-cost airlines to the high-cost airlines. Enjoy!

1. Qatar Airways

People often said that Qatar’s meals are the best. Well, we decided to try it out. In our flight (it was a long-haul flight), we chose the beef Thai green curry meal. The meal consists of beef curry with jasmine rice, and some side dishes like salads and dessert (cheesecake). The beef Thai green curry was exceptional for an in-flight meal. It is rich in flavor and the beef is also quite tender. More or less, the color wasn’t that exciting. It has a dullish green flavor rather than a vibrant one in Thailand. The rice is the typical Asian cooked rice. Overall, its a rather usual experience. Nothing special

2. Cathay Pacific

We traveled to Rome using Cathay Pacific, and it was the best thing that ever happened to me. We would rate my travel with Cathay Pacific 4.5/5.0. Food was simply amazing and tasty. Foods served there include shredded pork and preserved vegetables, light soya sauce paired with steamed jasmine rice; braised chicken thigh, French beans, carrots, potato mash, topped with lemon thyme and caper sauce, etc. For my trip we chose the shredded pork and preserved vegetables, light soy sauce paired with steamed jasmine rice. Personally, that was the best airplane food that we have ever tasted. Although the prices of the tickets might be pricey but we guarantee you that it would be totally worth it. This airline is totally a must if you are traveling long distances.

3. Singapore Airlines

SQ’s Glamorous Airbus A350-900XWB

Singapore Airlines have been our go-to carrier for the past decade! We can be considered a diehard SQ fan. They have consistently provided stellar and impeccable service all throughout, including their culinary sector. We have recently flown on their Frankfurt-Singapore (SQ 25) and Singapore-Jakarta (SQ 956) leg. During our flight from Frankfurt, we ordered their Pan Fried Herb Marinated Chicken with Orange Sauce along with their famed Nasi Lemak for breakfast. We were impressed by the presentation of their chicken. Sadly, the chicken tasted mediocre at best. It was rather bland and the texture was unusually chewy. On the other hand, the dessert (yoghurt), fruits, and bread were filling. Much acclaim to their service too though! The flight attendants were responsive and friendly. Our second meal was served eight hours after our first one, and boy were we excited. The Nasi Lemak turned out to be really tasty despite its simple looks. It surely is a real treat to your buds! One downside was the the lack of spiciness, but it really depends on your preference.

Lunch: Pan Fried Herb Marinated Chicken with Orange Sauce
Breakfast: Nasi Lemak

On our flight to Jakarta, we were served mee ayam, another of their signatures. It tatsed superb, although honsetly the noodles were more like thinly-sliced spaghetti. Overall, we would rate Singapore Airlines a ⅘ stars in terms of their in-flight meal.

4. Eva Air

For our first trip to Japan, we did not have much expectation for the place there, primarily the food. So we were at lunch time in the plane, just waiting for the food. At the time, we had already knew that airplane food did not taste as good as those on the ground. Added with the fact that we were not really fond of the taste of Japanese food. However as the food came, we were greeted with a salivating smell and as we opened the food we were shocked with how the meal was presented. As we tasted the food it was bursting with delightful flavors. As seen from above we tried We were so shocked by how delicious it was. It was scrumptious! That’s all we could say about Eva Airlines.

5. Garuda Indonesia

We’ve been on many Garuda flights in our lives, which technically means that we have just tried every food they have to offer and let me tell you it was delicious these foods were exquisite and delightful in our mouth. They once offered us a meat dish called Rendang in  our very own opinion it was delightful full of flavour it was like a blast of flavour another type of food they had once offered for us is the sweet and sour Fish now this fish tastes good it was not dull and tasteless but it tasted like the one we had in restaurants. We highly recommend you to try it.

6. Emirates

Emirates was voted as the best airlines in 2018. It was all over the news. Their food, however, was not rated the best. We tried their classic omelette dish. It was a set dish of the main meal and some other side dishes (side dishes vary, ours was a yogurt and a salad). We are gonna talk about the pièce de résistance, the omelette. Inside, there is the omelette of course, couple of button mushrooms and sautéed potatoes and spinach. The omelette has a good consistency to it. It’s not mushy. The taste? Nah, it tasted quite bland for us. The button mushrooms and sautéed potatoes was okay, although some of the potatoes are still a bit hard. The spinach wasn’t as soft as we thought it would be. It still has that vegetable crunch.

7. All Nippon Airways (ANA)

ANA’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

Founded in 1952, ANA is probably one of the best airline carriers out there. Their in-flight meals surely do not disappoint! On our flight to Tokyo Haneda, we ordered both options of meal, the first being an egga fritata and the second an oyako dish. One thing to note, their portion size was minuscule. The food came out considerably delicious. The oyako dish would probably win the podium though. It was authentic and the texture was tender. The egg fritata was not far behind. If you are an egg fan, this would definitely be the dish for you! Overall, an impressive experience we had with ANA. We would give them ⅘ stars.

8. Korean Air

This is our experience to Korea. Now the fact that we have not been to Korea means we are  going into this blind. Now because we have no absolute idea of what Korean food is other that Korean BBQ we have no idea of what the food we would find there  as soon as it was lunch, we were a little bit scared and a little bit excited because we have never tried it. W’ve only seen them in movies. On a side note the food we ordered was ( Bibimbap). When we saw the food our first reactions were: Too much vegetables. Way too much even for a bibimbap. On the other side, the food itself doesn’t taste great

9. Air Asia

AirAsia is Asia’s favourite budget airlines. What does their food taste like? Does a budget airline actually has decent food? Our opinion: it does. To get in-flight meal in Air Asia, you have to give a few extra bucks, unfortunately. We tried Pak Nasser’s Nasi Lemak in their A320neo during a flight from Jakarta to Penang. The Nasi lemak consists of rice soaked in coconut milk and pandan leaves, fried anchovies with fried nuts, chicken with rendang/curry sauce, boiled egg, and sambal terasi. Overall, it was decent for an airplane food. The rice wasn’t soggy, although it didn’t remind me of a good Nasi Lemak I tasted in Malaysia.

10. Scoot Airline

This picture is taken from Escape.com

We have used Scoot frequently in the past few years. It is not very fancy and elegant but it has a decent price. Although the seats are not really comfortable, this airline should be an option when you are traveling on a budget. However they do serve really tasty and delicious foods, such as Roasted Chicken Thigh with Honey Garlic Sauce, Signature Nasi Lemak, Stew Chicken with Rice and many more! Our personal favorite would be the Roasted Chicken Thigh with Honey Garlic Sauce, the chicken is tender and juicy, in addition to that the amazing honey garlic sauce on top of the chicken. If you are traveling close distances, we recommend you take Scoot Airlines because it has a decent price and its food, simply wonderful!

This is a survey we gathered from 26 people who often fly using airlines from our list.

This pie chart shows the percentage of people’s favorite airline meal. 50% of them said that Singapore Airlines had the best food. Second place goes to Emirates. Garuda Indonesia ranks in the bottom with only 1 vote after budget airline AirAsia.

Agape, Eros, Storge Philia

Ancient Greece are often ridiculed for the amount of drama they made during their time. Love was one particular theme that you will often find in Ancient Greek drama. These 4 types of love describes the types of loves that humans will experience.

Agape, the most unique one, are not present in humans as it is only found in a deity such as God himself. Agape is supposedly to be godly love, the love that mankind will never achieve.

Eros is what most people will call love. A love between two humans which involves deep romantic feelings and a sense of belonging. This is what we call romance.

Storge is what you probably will feel with your family. It’s a love that exists between your blood relations. A parents love toward their offspring or the opposite would be an example of storge.

The underrated Philia is often associated with brotherly love. The overrated Aristotle described at as a friendly love. In the Christian Bible, philia is a general theme of love there. Philia love covers love for humans, care, respect, and compassion. Here are our stories regarding each one. Enjoy

“The course of true love never did run smoothly”

William Shakespeare

Agape

There is no love greater than agape love! It is that intimate love God offers to us even if we do not want it. Being raised in a Christian community, my path through this relationship with Him was never easy. I knew that His love is present and never-changing, and yet, I sometimes deny –no, complicated– this entire drama. Yes, maybe during the holiday seasons, I am all elated and ecstatic, and maybe it was during those moments that my love for Him seemed the most prevalent. I savoured the joy and fun I had and ‘shared’ it with my God –an utterly beautiful experience. However, when the mood died and reality striked, I started to drift away from this bizarre love. It’s during those dark moments, when I am financially broke for example, that I start to lose my grasp for Him. I panicked. I was depressed. I cried. I questioned myself. I questioned my existence. I just did not know what to do, and it was during those crucial moments that I decided to abandon my one and only hope. It seemed as if He was the one that abandoned me although in reality I was the one who did. I wanted to feel in control and so I took the steering wheel. It was a mistake. It led me deeper into an impasse. What were cuts were now nasty wounds. God, however, was full of surprises. He sent hope when there was none. I reminisced that one moment when
…….

Eros

A story of love. The usual stuffs. Eros makes you feel stuff that you don’t want to feel. Once I liked a girl, she was fair in beauty and her kindness was endless. Her smile made my day and her sorrow ruins it. Like a race car, my heart beat like hell when she was close to me. She was someone close to me. She was so close, yet so far to grasp. I didn’t have the courage in me to confess. It was hard. Everyone who liked someone can relate, obviously, but this was a complicated case of love. A case of love where feelings of hatred and love mixed (You’ll see later). So after some time, I confessed on a day on a certain month. I gave her flowers, teddy bears, chocolates. I gave her literally everything that the guy in a K-Drama movie would. I followed the book and understood it. Then after some time, she replied with a letter, an electronic one. I was anxious. Then I opened the message. Those weren’t hurtful words for a normal human, but it was hurtful for someone who was in love. Tears came down flowing as if it was the fountain of Eden. I couldn’t understand what I did wrong. I followed the book. But now I understand, eros love wasn’t all about guidance. It was about what the heart wants. If the heart wants this, then the mind will execute it. Her heart clearly rejects mine. Such love, so rewarding yet so hurtful

Storge

My experience of this storge love occurs every single day of my life. I experience storge love when my parents drive me to school every day and provides me with food, water, and clothing for as long as I have lived. My parents have been a big influence in my life and taught me to be wiser and improve my life skills. They show their love by teaching me the right way to approach things in life as they themselves have encountered similar situations and made mistakes. They want us to avoid their mistakes and eventually be better than them and for that I love them so much for their care, compassion, and kindness.

Philia

Such example of philia love that I personally had is when I was still in kindergarten I had this friend that I really liked much, sadly he has already left school. But when I was small he was a really good friend of mine.  He always played in my house almost everyday. It felt very nice to be able to play with him. We were so close that we felt like brothers.
